“I would rather tear my own hair out” – lived experiences of exercise haters
in Consumer Culture Theory Conference, San Diego, California, USA, July 11-13, 2024 Consumer Culture Theory Consortium 2024
This research explores the experiences of self-identified exercise haters in a culture that values physical activity as a moral obligation. It provides insights into understanding exercise aversion by identifying three denigrating discourses (hyperbolic vitriol, rejection of exercise-enjoyment fallacy, and physical-intellectual dichotomy) and two aversion modes: reluctant compliance and resistant confrontation.
